Fantastic ride ! The first 50 miles were boring (following 280N.), and my pace wasn't great, but things got more interesting as we reached the coast. Gary pushed hard on Tunitas but I caught him up with Steve Fong in my wheel. Felt tired but good up Haskins/Alpine, slightly ahead of them. Then added Hwy 9 as a bonus climb, which was hard but ok. The extra mileage is a good preparation for the Terrible 2.

This is in place of the Terrible 2. Over the last couple weeks,
as I was tapering, my back pain has steadily increased, until I finally
decided to cancel the Terrible 2. This is such a disappointment !
Various pains throughout, in particular : back, left glute/hip, left
hamstring. More severe pain in left foot starting on descent from Black
Mountain on the way back. Didn't pack quite enough food and water.
Caught too much sun. Shivers later at home. Extreme stiffness later,
particularly left hamstring. Feeling feverish.
Otherwise good hike ...

up Tunitas at a very fast pace. (They meet on week-ends at 8:00 in

Maintained a high pace all the way to Bonny Doon, then slowed down.
Struggled to a crawl up Black.

Lack of sleep : Woke up at 2:00 am and unable to get back to sleep.
Started the Ride too fast. Struggled right from the start of 1st climb.
Tried to slow down somewhat, hoping to recover later. Felt a little
better back side of Monitor. Started Ebbett's ok, but wore down as the
climb went on. Mostly unable to get off the saddle. Heavy legs, out of
breath, general fatigue even in the arms, intestinal disorder. As Ebbett's
hard climbing resumed, I decided today was going to be hell, and I'd had
enough.
The main mistakes have been :
. Lack of recovery since last week's 500 miles. Although felt good off
the bike, legs were heavy (as evidenced in Wednesday's ride), rest
was not adequate.
. Poor nutrition Friday night. Too much to eat, bad food (e.g. Kraft
Parmesan). Probably contributed to poor sleep.
. Started WAY too fast. Feeling overconfident and exhuberant. Tried to
get ahead of the pack early on, and keep up with the best (although
many riders must have started earlier than 5:30). Probably shot my
legs and lungs in the first few miles. As it turns out, on each side
of Monitor's, I was about 10 minutes ahead of my times last year.
I reached the Ebbett's rest stop almost 1/2 hr quicker then last year.
Clearly underestimated the difficulty of the ride. This is a humbling
blow.

Awesome ride ! Was in a tentative mood following Death Ride, but quickly found out I was able to push. Great pace throughout, with managed effort. Feeling extremely confortable off the saddle. Very good ride. Started at night in the fog, daylight (and clear sky) as I reached HWY 9. Went (too) fast through first part of ride. Not eating enough so hungry on Mt Madonna. Also, barely any stops. Pole Line Rd. is extremely steep (but short) getting to Madonna. Easier pace up Eureka Cyn. Felt really tired up Black, and felt like crawling up Gist / Skyline. Partly in the head, as the whole day I feared this last climb. Do not start as fast on such long rides, even if it doesn't feel like much of an effort. Also, force yourself to eat. Was starting to feel overtrained before the ride, but wasn't an issue.

Woke up in the morning and decided to ride.
Started at night, first hooked up with a few slow riders, but then
joined a group of much stronger riders (and rode with them till the end).
Too fast on the first climb, started slowing down on purpose on Knoxville.
Low point from mile 90 to 120, but later second wind. Was unfortunately
just behind the head group (but joined them at the stops) so left to
break the wind alone in the second half. Some of the longer flat stretches
felt really long.
Very hot weather, nearly unbearable at times. Drank bottles 8 times, +
mostly Pepsi Cola at the stops, and yet didn't pee once. Didn't stop at
intermediate water stop on Knoxville climb but later regretted it.
Felt very good in the last couple climbs. Actually climbing was a relief
from all the flat.
Finished with "the front of the pack", most likely within the first
10 riders.
Back pain ok through the ride. Very careful to maintain good "flat-back"
position throughout. Only rarely in low hand position.
Mostly to the tune of Tshaikowsky's 4th.

In retrospect, this was one of my best rides ever.
Planet Ultra rocks!!!
Severe weather in first 50 miles : Extreme headwinds and drizzle, to
the point of being nearly pushed off the road.
Unable to stay with the front of the pack in this crazy wind. But then
had to do most of the work and pull a group of other riders.
Then as climbing started, weather got better, with clear skies and cool
temperatures (too cold for some riders). Early on, I met a guy named Chris
who I would pretty much stay with till the end of the day. As usual, I came
to life in the first climbs, and caught up with most people, Chris in my
wheel. We went on
to one of the most breathtaking descents I've ever experienced, through
the everchanging spectacular landscape of the High Mojave Desert. At that
point Chris and I had lost most riders in the climbs and were ahead.
This early pace may have been a little too hard, as I slowed down some in
the second half. As often, I weakened a bit towards the middle of the ride,
right around the lunch break. I didn't feel as strong in the climb over
Heartbreak, and let Chris go in front, but I was once again amazed by the
landscape, and this unique sense of wild remoteness.
Finished at night, with small light, but this was fine. (Had decided
at the last minute to not use heavy lighting equipment). Felt very
strong in the last 30 miles, completely exhuberant, descending back into
Palmdale. Planet Ultra rides are unlike any other, much fewer riders,
a support that's adequate but not intrusive so you have to be self reliant,
and no markings on the road so you have to navigate by the route-sheet,
which adds to the unique sense of adventure.
Back pain mostly under control during the ride. But a lot more low
position than last week due to the need for maximum aerodynamics.
This may have been responsible for increasing pain later.
Again finished in the top 10 riders (#8), this time out of 70.
Again, fantastic ride, the ride of my life !!
Now, the hardest feels done, have to wait for Death Valley to hopefully
complete my first Triple Crown.

Up to Ashford Mills, rode with a long group of riders following a
tandem (a couple from Santa Rosa). I took turns at the front, going at
pretty high speed. Hardly stopped at the rest stop, and as the climb started
lost people. Felt very good on the climb, going at a sustained pace.
The climb is not steep, but is long and straight. But towards the summit
(around mile 60), started feeling bad, dizzy etc. Stopped at the top to
eat a banana, which seemed to fix things. Decided on a slower pace from
that point on. The other side of the climb was not so bad, and from then
on, it was pretty easy going at a mellow pace, riding alone, not joining
any groups. I kept minimizing stops (under an hour total). Night fell on
the way to Stovepipe Wells. My light worked well, but kept sagging down.
I tried to hold it awkwardly, but then decided to only correct it
occasionally, which felt better. Made it to the finish, but didn't feel
that elated (as I thought I would be). In fact, although this was a great
ride, I was slightly disappointed, maybe because I had anticipated too
much for too long.
A strange thing happened in the days following: When the results
came out, the Planet Ultra Website listed me as DQ. In my post-Triple-Crown
daze, this was like the sky falling on my head. I was able to correct the
situation with Planet Ultra: They mistakengly thought I was one of a group
of riders who rode with a private SAG vehicle at night, which of course
was completely untrue, but I had little evidence to prove it. They did
reinstate me in the official list of finishers, and my Triple Crown Credit
was preserved. As silly as it sounds, this incident upset me incredibly.
Finished about 40th out of 128 (168 starters: 128 finishers, 4 DQ,
7 DNF, 23 completed 150 miles, 6 never checked in at the finish)
